The photographs from this series were made in and around mine and cave sites in Appalachain Virginia and inland Ireland. This project documents cave systems in the Appalachian Mountains in Southwestern Virginia, USA that my late father and I explored as a child. The panel on the left is a photograph of my father in a cave 30 years ago that I re-printed in silver, and the panel on the right is a photograph present-day of the aboveground world. The work is shown installed on the floor atop black plywood panels, offering the viewer the experience of peering into the cave’s mouth at larger-than-life scale. The work was made by lifecasting a back, overlaying layers of silver nitrate emulsion onto it, adding hair, and beading the hair with handmade rose petal beads. The piece was made by using expired chemsitry when processing the film, and printed on expired silver gelatin paper, allowing the fogged texture of the paper to obfuscate the legibility of the piece. In 2024, twenty years after his death, I descended back into these caves. Karst follows a loose narrative of this katabasis into the subterranean world, and consequently into memory. The resulting photographs act as evidence of mythic, poetic, and subconscious spaces that explore the visual reconstructions we create while trying to understand how time and depth work in tandem.Working in the darkroom is an emulation of being inside of a cave: it’s dark, wet, erupting with sensation, and produces some kind of holy imagery. Much of this work is produced by printing on expired silver gelatin paper, scarred by light over the course of its lifetime, allowing the imagery that etches into it reflect the dim conditions of the underworld. This project alludes to artificial grottos that are made as places focused around devotion and plasticity. Everything follows us home. The photographs are printed on expired silver gelatin paper from the US and the USSR, my two native cultures. Life-casted plaster sculptures, sometimes finished with a silver nitrate “skin” become shells that are shed after moments of bigness. version of the ideal fetishized Other. I corresponded with anonymous internet users (mostly self-proclaimed male) for several years, collecting writings that described their desires and fantasies, whether “true” or fabricated. These writings were combined to create (Have you seen) This Man, and were offered to the generative AI to provide it with guidance while producing its images.
